American Mary Plays in Winnipeg with a Skype Q & A with the Twisted Twins this Friday

"Seen as a pair of twisted twins in their horror movie American Mary, Jen and Sylvia Soska are an unnervingly creepy duo.

But behind the camera, as the directors and writers of the film, they are utter charmers, at least according to actress Katherine Isabelle, who was easily enchanted into playing the titular blood-drenched, scalpel-wielding anti-heroine by the 30-year-old sisters.

"When I first met them, we were supposed to meet for sushi at a normal dinner time around 6 o'clock, and we ended up going out till, like 4 in the morning, having a total blast," Isabelle says. "We were, like, instantly best friends. "They are so fascinating to be around, to watch their brains work," she says.

"You fall in love with them instantly and they inspire passion in everyone else. We all really, really wanted to make them happy." It's fair to say making movies make the Soska sisters very happy indeed. The Vancouver-spawned siblings first exploded on the scene in 2011 with a lurid $2,500 dark comedy titled Dead Hooker in a Trunk.

From there, they looked to Hollywood to solidify a career, but the experience of taking meetings with creepy Hollywood power players left an imprint on their second film, American Mary, in which Isabelle's medical student is abused by the "respectable" medical establishment and takes refuge in the underground world of body modification."

Don't Miss American Mary in San Diego

"It's scary how well "American Mary" is made. But the real horror in the film comes in some unexpected places. I don’t want to give too much away, but I will say that the story does turn into a revenge film and part of what’s scary is the darkness Mary finds inside herself. That’s what makes the Soskas so good. They do not go for the knee-jerk scare of something jumping out of the dark or for gross-out gore. They deliver carefully calibrated horror that looks to the darkness that lies within each of us. And they are really smart about how they use gore effects; they know when to show blood and when to leave it to our imaginations. They prove that all horror needs is a woman’s touch to refresh it.

The Soskas will have a special video introduction for the film on Friday night at 10 p.m. They will be in town on Saturday for a Q&A following the 10 p.m. screening. The second film in the series will be "Gut," with filmmaker Elias offering a mini-workshop on making and distributing an independent film after the two screenings of his film on June 14 and 15."

Beth Accomando paid out of her own pocket to make sure American Mary played in San Diego. I don't even know how to express my gratitude for such an opportunity and I cannot wait to see you guys there!

See You In the UK!

EIGHT!

DAYS!

TIL LONDON!!

AMERICAN MARY is coming to your town with Jen, me, Mary herself, Katharine Isabelle, brought to you by the rad folks at Film4 FrightFest before it's Universal Pictures UK DVD/BluRay release.

"FRIGHTFEST AMERICAN MARY TOUR Following its recent successful UK festival run, including the world's first screening at FrightFest back in August, we are delighted to be able to bring this stylish horror thriller to UK cinemas for a theatrical tour in January 2013.

Writers/directors Jen and Sylvia Soska, and Mary Mason herself, lead actress Katharine Isabelle, will be returning to the UK to join Alan Jones, Paul McEvoy and Ian Rattray to introduce shows the length and breadth of the country. Kicking off at London's legendary Prince Charles Cinema on Friday, 11 January the tour will be calling at Edinburgh, Glasgow, Sheffield, Leeds, Bristol and Brighton. Full details of dates, cinemas and times can be found below.

One of the year's most horrific highlights, American Mary tells the story of student Mary Mason (Katharine Isabelle) who grows increasingly disenchanted with the American medical school that she is attending and the doctors that she once idolised. The lure of easy money sends a desperate Mary through the gruesome world of underground surgeries, but soon finds it leaves more marks on her than the freakish clientele.
Clever, sexy, funny and utterly gorgeous to look at, American Mary features a standout lead performance from award winning actress Katharine Isabelle (Ginger Snaps), and puts the Soska sisters, a.k.a. the Twisted Twins, squarely at the forefront of modern genre filmmaking.

On both sides of the Atlantic, Jen and Sylvia Soska's American Mary has already been celebrated with more than a dozen international film festival honours, including Best Picture (LA ScreamFest, ShudderFest) as well as Best Director and Best actress (Toronto after Dark, LA ScreamFest, ShudderFest).

Total Film Magazine voted Katharine Isabelle Best Actress at FrightFest back in August, whilst SFX magazine called American Mary the 'Best of the Fest'.

Fri January 11 - 6.45 pm - Prince Charles Cinema, London

Sat January 12 - 10.00 pm - Edinburgh Filmhouse

Sun January 13 - 7.30 pm - Glasgow Film Theatre

Mon January 14 - 8.30 pm - Sheffield Showroom

Tue January 15 - 9.00 pm - Hyde Park Picture House, Leeds

Wed January 16 - 8.40 pm - Bristol Watershed

Thu January 17 – 10.15 pm - Duke of Yorks - Brighton"

Meet The Twisted Twins, at BIFF

Jen and I finished our fantastic whirlwind tour of Australia, thanks to the amazing people of Monster Pictures, with a screening at the Brisbane International Film Festival! There we popped into an alley, I flashed my La Senza pinks (I guess always wear black with a skirt that fabulous), made sure we could cuss, and got to the real meat and potatoes of AMERICAN MARY.

Please enjoy this interview. It's chalk full of twinny goodness and has some peaks at scenes in the film that you probably have not seen as of yet. MROW!!

Whistler WalkOuts, You Don't Say!

Whistler walkouts have Soskas smiling ... Vancouver’s terror twins, the Soska Sisters, were laughing as they told The Sun about their new movie, American Mary receiving the ultimate compliment for a Midnight Madness feature: walkouts. Dressed in clingy naughty nurse type outfits with matching black butcher’s aprons, the twisted sisters told The Sun there were lots of walkouts and horrified gasps. Said Jen, “I don’t think they knew what they were walking into.” Then she grinned. “It’s kind of a thrill for me. One of the coolest things that ever happened to me when I went to the movies is I was seeing House on Haunted Hill and a birthday party was in the row in front of me —”

Adds Sylvia, “And they were a chatty, annoying birthday party.”

Jen continues, “And as soon as the pencils went through a doctor’s neck in the first scene all of them got up and ran out screaming and I was like, ‘One day I’m going to do that. I’m going to make something and people are going to run out screaming and I’m going to be so proud.’ ”

Said Sylvia, “We were the first film in the late night program that they did and you just feel super special like, ‘Oh my God they picked me!’ Like at school we were nerds, no one picked us for anything except being beaten up and thrown in lockers.”

One of the film’s stars, Tristan Risk, a blue-haired burlesque performer who attended the debut of Mountain Midnight Madness in a barely-there pink leotard and strategically placed pastie, told The Sun, “everybody should go see the movie immediately. Take your grandmother and make sure she’s got life insurance.”

American Mary Brought to UK Theatres, Courtesy of Fright Fest!

By Ben Bussey

Here’s some news that will be music to the ears of many UK readers. Ahead of the previously announced Region 2 DVD and Blu-ray release from Universal on 21st January, American Mary will be doing a theatrical tour of the UK via FrightFest Presents, the new distribution arm of FrightFest. And if that didn’t get you going, perhaps this will: none other than Jen Soska, Sylvia Soska and Katharine Isabelle will be there in person at every screening.

Direct from the press release:

The tour will take in seven cities over seven dates, with introductions and post-film Q&As from the filmmakers, compered by FrightFest’s Alan Jones and Paul McEvoy.

Ian Rattray of FrightFest Presents commented: “After the fantastic reception both American Mary and the Soska Sisters got at FrightFest, we’re immensely proud to be able to partner Universal Pictures UK for the theatrical opening of the film. This is FrightFest Presents’ first step into theatrical distribution and American Mary is the perfect fit for us.”

Already one of the year’s most talked about genre films and the subject of immense praise far and wide, American Mary has actually proved to be a bit of a divisive film here at Brutal As Hell: Nia, as you might have noticed, loved it to death, and Steph was mostly very impressed as well, but Keri was considerably less enamoured. (I’m keeping my thoughts to myself for the time being.) But, as Keri noted, whether your reaction is positive or negative it’s definitely a film to stir debate, and“it’ll be interesting to see how opinion divides up (if at all) as the film inevitably reaches its wider audience.” Well, now’s our chance to find out…
