Goodbye, Blogger, Rest Your Weary Head Sweet Prince...

Hello, beloved boys and grrls...

Since we started out in our ventures of filmmaking, we've utilized social media and online video and blog sites to keep you abreast (giggity) of all of our exploits. From film news to behind the scenes goodies, from rants to raves, beginnings and ends, Blogger has been the first avenue we embraced to connect with you all. It started at DEAD HOOKER IN A TRUNK and has continued to grow as we have.

Blogger has seen us travel the world. It's seen us at our best. It's been there at our lowest. We've shared laughs and tears and memories that we'll never lose and always have just a library scroll away. But as our lives have changed, so has the world around us. New avenues have opened up for us to connect with you all. We now have so many ways to connect, many very VERY user friendly and so simple even at my most intoxicated can I regale you with every thought that enters into my mind and our long running quest for total and utter world domination beginning with the beautiful nation of Canada.

It is with a heavy heart that we now end our Blogger journey together. As our lives have changed, our time is more limited and we need to prioritize our methods of communication. We will always have our history together, but we will no longer be updating our Blogger. It will now take its well earned place in Valhalla as an archive of our journey from ambitious youngsters who wanted to kick the film world in the balls to the forces of nature we've evolved to today. None of which would have been possible without the love and support of you all and our methods of reaching you all.

Goodnight, sweet Prince. At long last, your work here is done.

You will be able to follow us and all that is to come for us on FACEBOOK, TWITTER, TUMBLR, INSTAGRAM, FLICKR, and YOUTUBE.

Thank you to all of you for being here with as throughout all and a very special welcome to those of you just coming into our lives and everyone in between. Thank you from the very bottoms of our Twisted little hearts....

Fatally Yours,
Jen and Sylv

Traumatic Cinematic Talks to the Twisted Twins

"AL: What does Women in Horror Month mean to you ladies personally? Does it hit close to home for you?
SS: WiH is a celebration for the under-recognized heroes that have pioneered and changed the industry in so many ways. There is a misconception that horror doesn’t appeal to women, the roles within it are misogynistic, and that women are not working behind the scenes to tell these stories. If we can change that viewpoint in horror, where we have this huge uphill battle for reassessment on gender equality, then there is hope for the rest of the industry.

JS: I feel it is about equality, celebration, and recognition. We should be well versed about the history of our industry and I was surprised how little I knew, initially, about the women who were our earliest trail blazers. It’s because they are simply not celebrated nor recognized to the level that they should. It’s also important to recognize that sexism is not a male against female issue as some of the most derogatory, sexist remarks out there come from girls being hateful of other women. And there are some phenomenal male feminists out there."

We Live Film Talks to the Twisted Twins

"1. February is ‘Women In Horror’ Recognition Month. Who are your favorite female film directors?
Sylvia: Mary Harron is the reason why I went into directing, she’s phenomenal. Alice Guy-Blache pioneered early cinema and the industry wouldn’t be what it is today without her contributions. Dorothy Arzner is hugely inspirational as the only female director during Hollywood’s golden age. I’m a big Punisher fan and loved Lexi Alexander’s vision and she’s got real balls, I really admire her. I’m really looking forward to Tammi Sutton’s Isle of Dogs this year! Also, Kathryn Bigelow is brilliant.

J
en: That’s tough. There are so many women that inspire us and our work. Jennifer Chambers Lynch is amazing. I love her body horror. She’s so unique and original. BOXING HELENA is one of our favorite films. I am so honored to be working with her and Mary Harron, Jovanka Vuckovic, and Karyn Kusama on XX. We also had the amazing opportunity to work with a collection of phenomenal female filmmakers for this year’s WiHM Massive Blood Drive. Maude Michaud, Patricia Chica, Isabel Peppard, Jessica Cameron, and WiHM founder herself, Hannah Neurotica."

Valentine's Day Viewing

"With Valentine’s Day imminent, Fangoria has decided our round of Valentine’s lists was just missing something. After all, we hoped our eclectic and eerie choices would help provide a gruesome alternative for any horror fan’s romantic evening. Perhaps, some of our readership may truly believe that romance is dead, and perhaps, that required some further convincing.

So FANGORIA reached out to Jen and Sylvia Soska, writers/directors of last year’s fan favorite AMERICAN MARY, and asked if they could add their twisted touch to the proceedings. Luckily, they obliged, offering us their top ten romantic horror films, guaranteed to warm even the deadest of hearts. So trust the twins and let these films become psychotic staples of your Valentine’s Day!"

Tavern of Terror Talks Twisted Twins

"And the Soskas, I've seen larger, widely read blogs, that bemoan the fact that they're attractive young women who dress like attractive young women have every right to, so this somehow cheapens the quality work they've done thus far. Just what the righteous fuck does their clothes and curves have to do with what they do behind the camera? Please explain! Frankly, I like looking at Jen & Sylvia, if they're using their looks to market what they do, then good on them! If one random dude sees a photo of them, likes what he sees, and rents/buys a copy of "American Mary" out of curiosity, then-mission accomplished!! And, also, fuck that!! Nobody is telling Norman Reedus to look even more greasy than he already does (seriously ladies, what's the fucking deal? 'Cause you all know if you saw Daryl Dixon on the street, you'd be like "ewwwwwww! who's the smelly hill-jack?") because it somehow de-legitimizes "The Walking Dead"! Grow up, some chicks are hot, and they have actual functioning brains, and they make cool shit-deal or move the fuck on."

"Look who made it into the new issue of Redrum - Das Filmmagazin again
The article is about the meanest girls in movie history. Our beloved Mary is just next to Annie Wilkes and Pamela Voorhees
I hope someday I can put an article about you two inside the magazine, that would be awesome!

Bloody Disgusting Talks WiH with Hannah Neurotica

"WiHM Founder, Hannah Neurotica Forman, decided such a month should be set in place after becoming engrossed in feminist studies during college, while at the same time indulging a deep passion for horror and slasher films—leading to feelings of feminist guilt and discomfort. Loving these films yet understanding why they were problematic sparked an internal conflict for Hannah. She felt guilty. It wasn’t until she discovered Carol Clover, author of Men, Women, and Chainsaws: Gender in the Modern Horror Film that Hannah was able to reconcile these two passions. Loving horror and fighting for women’s rights didn’t have to be oil and water.

Although she initially faced a few disgruntled consumers, the cause gets stronger each year, bringing in new advocates and fans in droves. Two of WiHM’s biggest advocates are those sexy albeit crazy twisted twins, literally The Twisted Twins, Jen and Sylvia Soska. Best known for their unapologetic attitude toward horror, and female-driven genre films Dead Hooker in a Trunk and the recent cult success American Mary."

The Rise of Women in Horror By Nia Edwards-Behi

"There’s no denying that the Soska Sisters and the relative success of American Mary became quite the focal point for clashing opinions (clashes I very purposefully stayed far away from at the time). While for some, the Soskas were and are horror’s brightest new stars, for many others their self-promotion and public personas were entirely objectionable. It seems to me that their success is not that much different from, say, the success of Adam Green with Hatchet, and his own public persona and interaction with fans. Yet – and by all means, I’m open to be corrected on this – I don’t remember the same backlash to his popularity. I’m by no means going to sit here and type under some self-illusion that I’m an unbiased commentator; however, given the ultimately niche nature of the kind of films we’re discussing here, what filmmaker wouldn’t shout as loudly as they could about a film that breaks out of that niche, even if only slightly? With American Mary’s relative success, the Soskas became figureheads for both sides of the debate. As a result, for me, many of the cracks in the naysayers’ side of the debate started to show more clearly. That prominent bloggers can argue that women filmmakers who ‘dress sexily’ and complain about not being treated equally are asking for such treatment speaks volumes of their lack of understanding of most of the issues that still need addressing in the debate."

One Room With a View Sees American Mary

"Aside from American Mary‘s already numerous merits, the paradoxically engrossing motley of Brian Pearson’s elegant cinematography consistently permeates the screen. Slow, languid movements are in perfect contrast with Mary‘s exploitative and visceral subject matter. Composer Peter Allan works in skillful synchronicity with Pearson’s muted intonations, resulting in an extremely accomplished and immersive space, upon which the Soskas emblazon their antithetically reticent impressions of a sub-culture known for its innate shock-value.

Consequently, American Mary occupies an innate sense of intimacy, that intuitively renegotiates the role of sub-culture within a scheme that customarily elicits systems of difference in an effort to evoke feeling. The pervasive use of tactical alienation that runs throughout the morbidly orthodox heraldry of horror surgeons, has been freely altered by the Soska’s tactful sensitivity. Lastly, the Twisted Twins have initiated a much desired re-calibration of the ostensibly overworked philosophies of conventional horror, once again demonstrating the conducive influence of cult cinema."

Seeing XX's

I love this.

"Every time I see this image, the concept of foreshadowing comes to mind. The Soska twins have worked so hard and you can tell they are such hard working women in the industry. They give so much of themselves to their fans, friends and loved ones, its humbling and inspiring. Most people, the minute they get any notoriety lose their sense connectivity to where they came from.
So, here, we see a shot of Mary, struggling, covered in blood and in the background, we see her attacker… but what really catches my eye now is the “X X on the doors to Mary’s new place.

As some of you may know, Jen and Sylvia Soska are now working on a film, specifically an all-female horror anthology titled XX. Itwill feature segments directed by female filmmakers.

The director roster includes JENNIFER LYNCH, known for Boxing Helena, Chained, Surveillance), MARY HARRON ( American Psycho, The Notorious Bettie Page) and of course, JENNIFER SYLVIA SOSKA (Dead Hooker in a Trunk, American Mary, See No Evil 2) among many other great female filmmakers.

If you know anything about me, you know that I am a strong proponent of strong, intelligent, and creative women. I do consider myself a feminist, specifically speaking, a third wave feminist. Therefore, to see that something like this is coming together is just not only awe-inspiring but also quite touching. I have always been an advocate for strong female leads, whether it’s in film or in t.v shows (I grew up watching Buffy the Vampire Slayer) or in bands (Evanescence, Lacuna Coil, The Veronicas etc) and I am the first person to root for “girl power.”

As a side note, just because a woman embraces her sexuality, dresses sexy and feels sexy, does not take away from her intelligence, wittiness, creativity and humbleness. A woman can be sexy, and humble!!! I can’t tell you how many times, I walk into a room, a meeting and can just tell the judgement on some people’s faces." ~Sandra Struzik

Witches and Pagans are Amped for WiH

""As I've been checking into women in the horror field I've come across some phenomenal women on Facebook--Patricia Chica Filmmaker Filmmaker --has won awards in the past few weeks for her movies and as a female director.
tWIStED tWINS PRODUCtIONS--is run by identical twins, Jen Soska, Sylvia Soska (Soska Twins) who have won awards for writing, acting and directing horror movies. All are independent produced, and not products of Hollywood but gaining huge followings across North America and Canada where both Patricia and the twin are from. There's even a month of recognition for women who are active in the field of horror--http://womeninhorrormonth.com/

I admire these ladies for what they're doing, not so much that it's in the field of horror which I've found myself not tackling, but for what they've accomplished in a field heavily owned by men. Much like women who make their way in sports, or the military, these women are on the forefront of gaining acceptance for what a female can do regardless of her gender but based on her talent, knowledge, ability and wiliness to work hard.""

Risk's Next Flick

Fuck yeah, Tristan!! Cannot wait to see this.

"Tristan Risk got our attention for her transformative turn in American Mary last year, now she's set to star in Love Sick for Polluted Pictures and director Todd Freeman.
The film is the story of Rebecca and Marcus who have been together for 10 years and after much deliberation have decided to part ways. After separating and being with others, they quickly realize how hard it is to disconnect from one another. The pain, lies, and betrayal all begin to manifest physically within the both of them as well as infect the others who have become involved with intimately. They love each other so much that it hurts… some more than others."

Katharine Isabelle is Margot Verger on Hannibal, Season Two

Meme by Kristin Colen

"Isabelle will play Margot, who suffered years of abuse at the hands of her serial-killer twin brother. Margot is now a patient of Dr. Hannibal Lecter's and, apparently, a potential love interest for Will.
However, there are two strikes going against that romance: Will is locked up, and Margot is evidently a lesbian. But hey, stranger things have happened on this show...
Isabelle will join the series during its eighth episode and hang around for four weeks. If Margot has a dark side comparable to American Mary's, perhaps the show's men had better watch their backs."

AMERICAN MARY win Horror Central's Fan's Choice Best of 2013

"Katherine Isabelle was absolutely born for the role of “Bloody Mary”, and her performance in this feature is nothing short of hypnotizing. There is no denying that the actress delivers a once in a lifetime performance, making the character believable, terrifying, and sympathetic all in the same frame; and all with elegant and flawless variations of simple facial expressions and features. If Dead Hooker in a Trunk was an experiment, then American Mary is the hypothesis. Jen and Sylvia Soska (AKA The Twisted Twins) set a new standard in independent horror filmmaking, and judging by the amazing leap between their first and second films, this community is nothing short of lucky to have both of them gracing the screen with their horrifying visions."

A huge thank you to Horror Central and all the fans that voted for choosing AMERICAN MARY as one of your favorite films of 2013. To have the fans have voted and chosen means the world to us. Thank you so very much. This is awesome.

Body Modification Images

I don't usually do this sort of thing, but staying quiet makes me part of the problem rather than the solution. I've been seeing a lot of images of body mods going around Facebook with a rather negative connotation - whether it be something to do with mental issues, personal choice, or if you feel like fucking these people based purely on their appearance.

People in the body mod community are constantly being attacked, instead of educating ourselves, we choose to point and laugh. Something is different from our main stream, so we tear it down. What is the fucking point in that? I know members of the body mod community and they are wonderful, kind, patient, and sound individuals. They have to be spokesmodels for education because they are constantly explaining themselves.

If you aren't into body modification, cool, that's fine. But please don't delight in ridiculing people based purely on their physical features. You are robbing yourself of having an opportunity to truly know an individual.

Chirality's 'Soska' One of the top Nail Polishes of 2013

"As we move into 2014, let's take a moment to look back at the past year and appreciate some amazing polishes!
At first I was just going to do a top 10 list - but somehow polishes just kept getting added! I finally settled on my favorite number, lucky 13. I would also like to note, this in no way is all of my favorites for the year. I have been lucky enough to review so many beautiful polishes this past year, a fact I am so grateful for! A few have stood out more than others though, and I would love to share them with you - and I also want to thank you for your support in 2013 as well. Without my followers I would be no where, and I hope you know how much you mean to me! So let's get started on this list, dear reader.

5. Chirality - "Soska"

I am grateful to Chirality, not just for the kindness and opportunities to swatch they have given me, but also because they have introduced me to some amazing horror film creators I never would have known about otherwise! Soska is a striking true black linear holo based on the amazing Soska twins, two wonderful gals with a chilling list of films under their belts. I love the unique inspirations behind Chirality's polishes - plus it's not easy to make a black holo that doesn't lean grey. For these reasons I applaud them, and look forward to seeing what other ghastly inspirations they find in the new year!"
