Carl Sykes watches a lot of movies. Like a shit ton of movies. So, we were thrilled that our rotting, festering baby girl, our first-born, DEAD HOOKER IN A TRUNK made her sassy way onto his screen. What did he think? Did the dead whore hit the spot? Well...

                       

"The film is a breath of fresh air in its originality; it sheds all genre clichés to offer an unpredictable, and for the most part entertaining ride. It's original ideas like this that sadly often get overlooked by film fans in place of the run-of-the-mill movies pumped out by the studio system, but if you take a chance on a little independent flick once in a while, you'll find a polished jewel amongst the dog turds."

I am a geek. I will absolutely admit it, but like animals in the wild, my appearance somewhat disguises my entire nerdism to protect me from predators. "What can be said about DEAD HOOKER IN A TRUNK? It is the best title for a movie since HOBO WITH A SHOTGUN. It is a ninety minute drug fueled ride through anarchy and insanity. It has already filled out the paperwork to be inducted into the cult classic hall of fame. It is bad fucking ass."

Film Deviant Gets More Deviant With Dead Hooker

The Soska sisters have created a gory fucking blasty blast of a film.

Film Deviant is a very wicked cool horror review site that we came to know by one of their sweet writers, Bryan Martinez. These folks love horror - there is a shit ton of reviews on their site for every horror flick you love and many independents that you might have never even heard of. So, Bryan took DEAD HOOKER IN A TRUNK home to watch with a group of friends the other night. What was the verdict? Did our dead girl manage to handle a large group without disappointing? She is dead after all.

"The Soska Sisters (aka Twisted Twins...because, well, they're twins and they film twisted things) are a fresh breed of filmmakers. In the tradition of Jason Eisner and his Hobo With A Shotgun and Tom Six with his Human Centipede films, Dead Hooker In A Trunk is another great example of filmmaking with the sole intention of letting all the sick and twisted visions out of one's head.

Now, I mentioned the Human Centipede films and Hobo With A Shotgun because that's the kind of thing that Dead Hooker In A Trunk evokes. Films that don't really exist in the scope of a safe society...but, goddamn, they're so much fun to the rest of us. Aren't they? I remember watching Hobo With A Shotgun in a packed midnight theater and that proved to be my favorite movie-going experience of 2011. Well, I recently sat down with a small group of film lovers to watch my new copy of Dead Hooker.

I think that it's important to point out how much I love these kinds of films. I live for dead hookers in trunks and hobos with shotguns and 12-person human centipedes. That's the kind of stuff that flows through my blood. So, while I will rate this film on a technical scale, my final blood score might seem a little biased."

Dead Hooker in a Trunk makes Mark's Final Cut

An independent film can only have as much weight as the support of the horror community that checks it out, tells a friend, writes a review, pimps it the fuck out. We have been incredibly fortunate with our first film, DEAD HOOKER IN A TRUNK, not only because it has been released, had a television premiere, is available on VOD and DVD, and travelled the world in film festivals, but also because it is still doing that. The word is getting out, people are taking the time to stand by this crass indie, and more people are hearing about the film and checking it out.

I saw this fucking awesome review from Mark Krawczyk and his Final Cut film review show and was stoked to see that he got a chance to check out the flick and really dug it.

We twisted twosome are huge fans of the team at Truly Disturbing Horror and what a coincidence as they dig our DEAD HOOKER IN A TRUNK. Hayes Hudson's House of Hooker

"DEAD HOOKER IN A TRUNK wins two awards from me. First off, it wins my award for best title ever! Second off, it wins my most unexpectedly enjoyable film of the year. Not to say I didn't think I would like this film, but I just really didn't know much about it and being the Soska Sisters first feature film, I had my concerns. Well, you would never know this was a first feature from the directors. I enjoyed this film more than I thought I would for sure."

Like the best people on the planet, Hayes has always loved horror (and alliteration for that matter - double cool points) and his fucking fantastic (alliteration) site is there to share that love. It's like two people marrying for love rather than bucks and perks - you can't fake the real thing and it's an absolute pleasure to check his stuff. Yes, I creeped his site - I'm not too much of a creepo to admit it.

When Jen and I came up with the idea for DEAD HOOKER IN A TRUNK, it was a flashy fuck you for (alliteration) the 'film school' that ripped us off and squandered what should have been the budget for our final project. It was a fake trailer in the realm of the multi-collaborative and ridiculously underrated GRINDHOUSE flick which truly was all the film school we needed. That and like every 'Ten Minute Film School' Rodriguez ever made. The excitement over the fake trailer led to excitement for a feature and it was our main priority to make something crazy and fun that you could turn your brain off and laugh like a moron to for 90 minutes. The format - well, we were making a chick road trip flick with a very visible love for the flicks we grew up loving.

"As I stated before, it is very hard to categorize this film. It definitely has a lot of dark comedy elements to it, and reminded me a bit of the (very underrated film in my opinion) VERY BAD THINGS. But don't worry, you gore hounds will have something to enjoy as well, as there is a LOT of blood in this film and some crazy scenes involving a dismembered arm and someone losing an eyeball. That is all I will say about those things, as I don't want to spoil all the surprises for you."

Son of Celluloid Discovers a Strange Smell Coming from the Trunk... and Digs it!

Ok, before I review this movie, which is damn good by the way, I have to rant for a minute first. It’s a tried and true rule in horror cinema, and cinema in general, that if someone stumbles upon a profitable idea, it will be taken, copied endlessly, ridden hard and hung up wet, done to death, and run into the ground. Currently, mainstream, big budget studio horror is riding the tail end (hopefully) of the remake and 3D waves. In indy horror, neo-grindhouse and exploitation flicks are currently all the rage.

At least two thirds of the trailers I’ve seen for low budget, independent “genre” films in the last year have featured either fake film aging or an old school “coming attractions” screen. Tarantino and Rodriguez’s Grindhouse may have been a box office disappointment, but it sure was influential. Actually, maybe a better word would be imitated. Fake age drives me nuts. I think it’s ridiculous to buy brand new t-shirts made to look like you’ve been wearing them for 20 years. You have to earn that vintage look. I feel the same way about the fake film aging. It’s just dumb. It was fine in Grindhouse, because it was unique. That hadn’t been done before. Now everyone and their mothers are making crappy slasher or “exploitation” flicks, artificially aging the digital footage, and calling it a “throwback.”

It can occasionally work as a nod to the genre's heritage, but a little goes a long way folks! Lines, grain, lost reel gags, and that sort of gimmickry is not what draws us to these films. The best neo-grindhouse movie since, well, Grindhouse was Hobo with a Shotgun, and it had none of that. What makes this subgenre special is its spirit. The ideal that nothing is off limits, anyone with an idea can make a movie, and being as outrageous and potentially offensive as possible is the name of the game. It’s the manic energy, DIY aesthetic, and “up yours” to conventional standards of cinema that made these movies special in the 70’s and 80’s, and it’s what makes the good flicks of this new wave exciting.

Which brings me to the flick at hand; Dead Hooker in a Trunk. Dead Hooker in a Trunk doesn’t employ the fake aging, but it is more spiritually akin to the exploitation movies it is inspired by than most I’ve seen. - Nathan Hamilton, Son of Celluloid

Thank you, fucking eh, I completely agree, and thank you again so kindly. This is the beginning of the fantastically intelligent and knowledgeable piece by the sharp, Nathan Hamilton of Son of Celluloid. It's amazing how GRINDHOUSE - which was wrongfully considered an unsuccessful project - was the force that re-ignited the flame of grindhouse, DIY filmmaking.

But as Nathan explains - it's not the weathered footage or the missing reels that make the flick, it's something deeper, and for it to be successful you need to grab onto that independent, 'we don't have any money, so let's use our brains to make something rad' spirit that will never let you down. But did we, the team that I love who came together to create DEAD HOOKER IN A TRUNK, succeed in our ambitions?

The passion they have for films like this and the fun everyone was having making it is evident. It definitely epitomized the DIY school of filmmaking. They have been tight lipped about what the actual budget was, but in an interview on the Altered Realities podcast they said that you couldn’t buy a used car for what they spent on the flick. For a film this low budget, it looks great. The action scenes and gore are amazingly well done, and it has a definite visual flair.

Everyone puts in a good performance. The four central performers in particular have a great onscreen chemistry and, in a rarity for movies these days, actual character arcs. The story is very creative and unpredictable. It moves along at a breakneck pace that keeps you constantly anticipating just what kind of outrageousness and weirdness they are going to throw your way next. The final line of the film is both a perfect coda to the ride you’ve just been on and a laugh out loud inside joke for lovers of this type of flick. In other words, this movie is just a whole hell of a lot of fun.

Now no more delicious morsels of this fine horror aficionado dining review - you must make your reservations, put on a tie, and prepare for the entire yummy helping here. Also, I think if you look around for a boo or two, you will dig this talented and well versed writer's musings on your favorite bloody flicks.

It has awesome of awesome to wake up this morning to a fucking wicked review of the flick by Jason Lees of MoreHorror.com. What impression would the independent picture leave on this talented writer?

Dead Hooker in a Trunk is about this dead hooker in a trunk. Sort of. We open with two sisters (the multi titled writer/director/star/producing duo of the Soska Twins, Jen Soska and Sylvia Soska) and a few friends who are just going about their day when they get an odd whiff of something coming from the back of their car. From there, we get drugs, violence, loud LOUD music, and enough cursing to make Quentin Tarantino ears blush. The set up is a bit forced, but looking back at the film now, I’m pretty damn sure it was the Twins psyching the audience out. I think they knew their audience would be expecting something with a title like that so they kept their cards close their chest, so when they flash their hand, damn, it’s shocking.

Yes, the first half hour or so had me wondering what I was in for, with its loopy logic and less than waterproof plotting, but then we get this apartment invasion scene and damn it, it made me a fan in a big way. From that moment to its finale, “Dead Hooker in a Trunk” was calling the shots. Anything it wanted to show me, I’d believe. Someone loses an arm? Yea, I bet they’ll be okay. Someone gets nearly ripped in half? Of course I’ll buy them being fine in the next scene. This may be the Soskas debut feature, but they know how to handle an audience. They lead us through the story and take us right where they want us to go.

Dead Hooker in the House of Vyle

A few weeks ago I had a chance to see a movie that had been on My "to watch" list, Dead Hooker In A Trunk. Yes, for those of you who have not heard of this film it probably sounds like it should be paired up as a grindhouse double feature with Hobo With A Shotgun, and yeah in all reality it probably should. This is the vision and debut film of Jen and Sylvia Soska, a pair of twins from Canada who are crafty, creative, sexy and definately twisted, as their Twisted Twins production company with a logo that is a pair of small "t's" which look like gravestones would imply.

Now I love independent films. even the really bad ones and especially off the wall ones. For those unaware before Peter Jackson began putting out Lord Of The Rings, and Sami Rami began making Spider-Man films that they had both churned out outrageous splatterfest like Brain Dead, Bad Taste and the Evil Dead Trilogy. So if Dead Hooker In A Trunk seems a little off the wall, wild and wierd, remember that some of the biggest names in movies started out the same way.

If you like off the wall films like Bad Taste and Pink Flamingos then Dead Hooker In A Trunk is right up your alley. It's one of those movies you have to see to appericiate, but in My opinion it doesn't fall into that "so bad" it has to be seen to be appericiated films category, becuase in the end for all its cheesiness and lack of logic Dead Hooker In A Trunk is a great film. In fact I even told the Soskas if I was ever in an accident and lost a limb I hoped it happened in Canada, where it appears they're doing miricales with reattachments.

There are few words that actually an put the feeling into text of having DEAD HOOKER IN A TRUNK not only released in the UK & Australia - courtesy of Bounty Films, released on VOD with a limited theatrical release in the US & Canada - courtesy of IFC Midnight, and now on television - courtesy of The Horror Channel. It's enough to keep these filmmakers feeling extremely humbled by the outpour of kindness, support, and enjoyment of the flick.


It makes our life to hear what people have to say about the project. It was a great ambition of ours to make a project that was fun to watch and completely insane - to know that we hit the mark means the world to us.
