Dread Central Sees Some Evil 2

""I think a lot of people are surprised that See No Evil 2 is our next film, but if you knew us during our teens, it would make perfect sense," say the Soskas. "It wasn't even a match that initially caught our attention; it was The Undertaker in the ring talking about this dark secret and his brother. It was so engrossing that we were instantly hooked. The excitement continued for weeks as we were planted in front of the television every week leading up to Bad Blood/Hell in a Cell, where the buried past brother made his debut to the announcer's screams, 'This must be Kane!'"

"There is no show on earth like what you see in the WWE and it only makes sense that they would translate that high level of entertainment to film, starting with See No Evil starring our personal favorite, Kane. Many years have past since then. We never became the first female twin tag team wrestlers that we dreamed of - the beautiful Bellas hold that honor - and we went on to become horror directors.""

Dread Central Talks to Mary

Dread Central: Because of Mary's 'hobbies,' your character gets to have a lot of gory fun but also probably required you to train a little to get some of the medical procedure techniques right I would imagine. How much preparation did you have to do going into American Mary and did you enjoy getting messy for the role?
Katharine Isabelle: Oh yeah, all that stuff was so much fun too- I had a blast doing all the gory stuff and when I bludgeoned the security guard, that's actually my friend so that moment was fun in a lot of other ways for me too (laughs). The great thing about genre movies is that they often allow you the chance to do things or experience things you never would in normal life, and that includes body modification for me. That wasn’t something I was knowledgeable about at all and the Soskas were so sweet about immersing me in this world which can be scary to people who nothing about it. The thing I also really appreciated about American Mary is that both Jen and Sylvia handled the body modification elements with such respect and a lot of filmmakers probably wouldn't have done that; at least not the way they did.

But I did get to do a lot of suturing, that's something that Russ Foxx helped me out with. I'm a pro at suturing a turkey now (laughs).

Dread Central Talks Mary Modification

"After months of speculating, head-scratching, hand-wringing and a teaser trailer that evoked more questions than it answered, the secret is finally out. Just what is the Soska sisters' new film American Mary all about?

The answer: underground, extreme body modification.

Dread Central was recently lucky enough to sit down with the Twisted Twins, Jen and Sylvia Soska, and discuss American Mary. To describe the experience, interviewing the Soskas is like trying to hug a beehive…incredibly intense energy, tireless activity and the sense that even though you're dealing with multiple entities, there's an overall feeling of single-mindedness and unity. The Soskas are an incredible breath of fresh air, and after the success of their unique first film, Dead Hooker in a Trunk, the ladies are looking to solidify their place in the horror community. Judging by early response, American Mary is just the film to do it for them." -Doctor Gash, DREAD CENTRAL

Jen and I were lucky enough to have the opportunity to speak with the very cool, horror aficionado Scott Hallam aka Doctor Gash of Dread Central about our upcoming film AMERICAN MARY into the wee hours of the night. People sometimes get the Twisted Twins warning before meeting us - 'they talk very fast, switching between one another, finishing each others' sentences, and use extremely foul language' - however that didn't seem to bother Scott as the three of us talked horror and the real subject matter behind the pitch of 'underground surgery' - body modification.

"American Mary follows the story of Mary Mason, played by Katharine Isabelle, as she becomes increasingly broke and disenchanted by medical school and surgeons she once admired," Sylvia Soska explained. "The allure of easy money sends Mary into the world of underground surgeries that leaves more marks on Mary than her freakish clientele."

Jen Soska added, "In a way, American Mary is a metaphor for our own journey through the film industry,", alluding to the fact that the people who look the most trustworthy and perfect are often anything but.

Having been immersed in the world of AMERICAN MARY for the last few years, writing the script, doing the background research, making the film, screening, marketing, we have been dying to say the words 'body modification' in relation to the film and what that culture and the members of its community mean to us. This was that golden opportunity.

If you're looking forward to the release and this new film, fuck, if you are interested in something very different coming out in the horror genre, please take a look at the entire piece here and see your first look at the world of AMERICAN MARY.

Fans of the Soskas' previous film, Dead Hooker in a Trunk, will certainly be wondering what similarities their second effort has to their original offering. One thing you can count on is the twisted Soska humor returning in full bloom. "You're gonna know who the sick fucks in the audience are," Jen said. "There are moments that are very laugh out loud, but there are moments where you have to be one of the dark creatures to be laughing." "I'm so passionate about this movie," Sylvia said. "I get so fucking focused on what this needs to look like and what the characters need to do, I don't see anything else. I love stories about outcasts and people who people don't usually understand. Jen and I were horribly teased growing up. We were teased, we were spat on, they called us witches, they beat us up and threw us in lockers."

"We were not popular at all," Jen remarked.

"They called us 'The Fitzgerald Sisters' so we watched Ginger Snaps," Sylvia said, "and that was the first time we saw Katie."

A very huge and humble thanks to the brilliant team at Dread Central who have always supported independent filmmakers, in particular crazed twins from Canada. Thank you for the hours of your life that you lost with Jen and me chatting like madwomen with you.

And thank you to you, the dude/chick reading this post right now. Without your support, none of this would be possible. Cannot wait for you to see the film!

IFC Midnight Hooker Trailer Slinks Onto Your Favorite Horror Sites

The story of a group of film nerds banding together, maxing out credit cards to make a feature, isn't something that usually gets the opportunity of a wide release, but because of the people of the horror community that stood by DEAD HOOKER IN A TRUNK, shared the story and spread the word - the film is going into its world release and has a sexy new trailer cut by the wonderful folks at IFC Midnight.

Here are our friends that are standing strong behind the film and pimping the new trailer. Very good folks - it's an honor to be on these sites. Thank you for the support and making this all possible --

DREAD CENTRAL

ANYTHING HORROR
"Just got an email from my favorite twisted sisters, Jen and Sylvia Soska, about their debut film DEAD HOOKER IN A TRUNK. We all know this isn’t a new film. In fact I review it back in July of 2010 (see my review here). But back then it was a relatively unknown film and I wanted to help the Soska sisters change that. I don’t know how much I personally helped*, but today DEAD HOOKER IN A TRUNK has become a cult classic and is finally getting the recognition it deserves. Not only has it been picked up by IFC Midnight, but it’s currently playing on VOD, it’s having a limited theatrical run in the US, its available on DVD in both Australia and the UK, and the rest of the world will be able to get the DVD early in 2012, with a ton of DVD extras (deleted scenes, outtakes, a behind the scenes featurette, director commentary, and technical commentary)." - Scott Shoyer

*Scott is being a modest gentleman, he has supported the film immeasurably. AnythingHorror.com is always there to support the independents.

TALES FROM THE BATCAVE
"Brand new trailer for the movie you're probably most sick of reading me ramble on about, Dead Hooker in a Trunk! We are finally getting our region 1 dvd release from the fine folks at IFC Midnight this January! About damn time too, I need more than my screener copy of this." - Mister Bones

IGOR'S LAB
