D'Ment'D Cinema's Steve Mezo reviews DEAD HOOKER IN A TRUNK!!

"I always tell people if you want to be a Indie Horror Filmmaker "Get off of your ass, write a script, get a video camera, get a few friends, make a few gallons of fake blood and make a Horror Movie!"

Jen and Sylvia Soska did just that and are taking the Horror World by storm!!!" ~Steve Mezo, D'ment'D Cinema

D'Ment'D Cinema is radcore. If you aren't familiar with them, then you haven't been up on your Penny Dreadful Diary reading, tsk tsk. They are the ones who bring you the Good, the Bad, and the Ugly of movies, TV, toys, books, curiosities, oddities, and everything in between. Pretty much is your one stop shop for things both chalk full of wicked and awesome.

And speaking of wicked awesome, may I turn your attention to Steve Mezo. We recently had the pleasure of chatting with him and if you missed it you can catch that interview right HERE.

In addition to taking the time to chat with us, Steve has also been so kind as to review our beloved, first born baby, DEAD HOOKER IN A TRUNK. And what did this honorable, fellow Hungarian have to say? Here's a little taste...

"It was full of this over the top violence that makes you laugh (In a fun way) because it's like watching humans act like Warner Brothers Characters. I mean where else can someone get their eyeball knocked out of their head with an aluminum baseball bat and be just fine with a electrical tape eye patch?" ~Steve Mezo, D'ment'D Cinema

Now I know that only whets your appetite, but free not, true believers. There's the FULL REVIEW that you can devour right HERE.

A very special thanks to Steve Mezo and D'Ment'D Cinema for their outstanding achievements in awesome. And thank you most kindly for taking the time to chat with us and check out our DEAD HOOKER. Our DEAD HOOKER IN A TRUNK, btw, is now available on Video On Demand compliments of the wonderful folks at IFC Midnight, it'll be hitting limited theaters for special midnight screenings, and if you're lucky enough to live in Australia or the UK, that sucker is already out on DVD.

Please enjoy responsibly ;)

Twins in Comic Form

The coolest thing happened the other day. I was approached by the CEO Brainmachine Comix regarding their comic book series, The Unforgivable #4 Necrowpolis on 4-4-12. Now, I'm not going to give too much away, but the comic will have two characters based on Jen and myself and I cannot fucking wait. Look for the introduction of the Blood Sisters in the upcoming issue.

Here is the first sneak peek of the cover --

This is a dream come true for a pair of comic book nerds and I cannot wait to get my mitts on this new issue! And all the others. Artwork looks sick. Must. Fight. Total. Nerdgasm.

Stay tuned for more!

Do What You Love and You'll Never Work Another Day in Your Life

People have told me I suck. It happens. When we started making DEAD HOOKER IN A TRUNK with maxed out credit cards and mad ambition, people went out of their way to tell me that it would never work, we would never pull it off, and nobody would watch the flick.

That was almost four years ago, since then the film has been sold worldwide, released first in the UK and Australia by Bounty Films on May 23, 2011, who also gave us our recent television premiere on the Horror Channel, then IFC Midnight bought the remaining world rights and released the flick on VOD on August 3rd and started the flick's limited theatrical release through Canada and the US (demand it in your city - we will hook you up!) with plans to release the DVD in January 2012. If you have a region free player, you can already grab your copy from with either of Bounty's Australian or UK DVD (or both).

The film came from a fuck you to the 'film school' we attended that cut the funding from our final project and told us to 'merge with another group.' Thank God GRINDHOUSE was in theaters at that time that acted as a real film school to get us making our own flick and we never looked back. Find what inspires you to be who you want to be and do what you want to do and make it happen for yourself. And those people who said I sucked? Some of them still feel the same way, others tell me they 'always knew' I could do it.

Too many assholes out there trying to make other people's lives as shitty as theirs. When I see someone going out there, fighting for their dream, it makes me happy to see more fighters out there - making it happen. One such individual is John Ginder. Avid horror fan forever, John recently took the plunge and started turning that honest to goodness love of the genre into a writing career - and let me tell you, girls and boys, when you are doing what you were born to do, everything just fits into place. I love talking to John - we make friends over DHIAT and are now practically family. He treats everyone he meets with respect and he knows his shit.

Everyone has been telling me about how much they enjoy speaking with John and I'm so glad to have him on the scene. It was beyond humbling to see his blog - A HORROR-FYING BLOG - post this morning --

"Okay , everyone- I must thank two most amazing gals for their inspiration and encouragement to leave the safety of the "nonwritng John" to the "writing John". Two folks , sisters , to be more precise, TWINS, really inspired me to do writing,I have always felt like I sucked as a writer, all through growing up never did very well at writing essays etc, nor giving speeches! These two gals ,followed their dream, and made it happen and are living their dream, they are so humble and so appreciative of their fans and friends! I was a fan first, then become friend, now, damn it- wow- I am now a "nonblood family", I am listed as brother on their Facebook- and that makes me so happy! Why??? Because of their encouragement ,their inspiration to get out of my own safety zone and get the hell on with my dreams!"

John was going to be a fucking awesome horror writer and reviewer always and I feel very lucky to have had our story and friendship help in anyway. Clickity click here for the full lovely post. I want to thank John for supporting our flick and pimping his Hooker T like a general of the Twisted Twins Army (I'm serious, there will be dogtags soon). It's because of that support and people sharing the project that it has become what it has and we get to do this for a living. Grateful doesn't even begin to describe the feeling - thank you from the bottom of our hearts.

If you, reading this, have a dream that everyone shits on, please tell those folks to fuck themselves super hard (they probably need it) and go out and make that dream happen for yourself. If you dedicate yourself, work hard, and sacrifice to make it happen - you can't fail.

DEAD HOOKER IN A THEATER

Yes, my darlings. It's theater time.

When we first started our DEAD HOOKER IN A TRUNK journey we were told of all the things that we wanted to do that were impossible. On that list was a theatrical release. They said we'd never, ever be able to have it in theaters. I'm so happy that "they" tend to be wrong more often than not.

IFC Midnight has welcomed our DEAD HOOKER into their loving arms and is bringing her to select theaters through a series of very special Midnight Screenings. As promised, we will be giving you the times and dates as we get 'em.
First up? DEAD HOOKER IN A TRUNK doubles with BELLFLOWER at the Downtown Independent in lovely LA. It'll be playing FRIDAY AUGUST 26th. Doors at 7pm, BELLFLOWER at 8pm, and then it's mother fucking DEAD HOOKER IN A TRUNK at 10pm sharp.

And I must say I just love this theater. Why? How is it that I know this place? The Downtown Independent Theater hosted the Viscera Film Festival last year. We attended, pimped our Hooker, met the fantastic femme fatales festival heads and creators Heidi HoneyCutt and Shannon Lark, and so many other outstanding women in horror I was smiling ear to ear like I was watching ONCE MORE WITH FEELING (that's a little something something for you Buff-hards). It is an absolute pleasure to have our DEAD HOOKER returning to a theater that was so damn good to us.

Now let's fill that bitch up. If you're ANYWHERE near LA, please come out and see our DEAD HOOKER. I'd love to get photos and hear you thoughts. Please help spread the word.

This Friday, blow off all your other plans and get your daily recommended serving of awesome, in Dead Hooker form.

Here's the address, boys and grrls! Let's make this one to remember...

Downtown Independent Theater
251 S. Main St.
Los Angeles, CA 90013

More dates and more cities coming at you soon!

Son of Celluloid Discovers a Strange Smell Coming from the Trunk... and Digs it!

Ok, before I review this movie, which is damn good by the way, I have to rant for a minute first. It’s a tried and true rule in horror cinema, and cinema in general, that if someone stumbles upon a profitable idea, it will be taken, copied endlessly, ridden hard and hung up wet, done to death, and run into the ground. Currently, mainstream, big budget studio horror is riding the tail end (hopefully) of the remake and 3D waves. In indy horror, neo-grindhouse and exploitation flicks are currently all the rage.

At least two thirds of the trailers I’ve seen for low budget, independent “genre” films in the last year have featured either fake film aging or an old school “coming attractions” screen. Tarantino and Rodriguez’s Grindhouse may have been a box office disappointment, but it sure was influential. Actually, maybe a better word would be imitated. Fake age drives me nuts. I think it’s ridiculous to buy brand new t-shirts made to look like you’ve been wearing them for 20 years. You have to earn that vintage look. I feel the same way about the fake film aging. It’s just dumb. It was fine in Grindhouse, because it was unique. That hadn’t been done before. Now everyone and their mothers are making crappy slasher or “exploitation” flicks, artificially aging the digital footage, and calling it a “throwback.”

It can occasionally work as a nod to the genre's heritage, but a little goes a long way folks! Lines, grain, lost reel gags, and that sort of gimmickry is not what draws us to these films. The best neo-grindhouse movie since, well, Grindhouse was Hobo with a Shotgun, and it had none of that. What makes this subgenre special is its spirit. The ideal that nothing is off limits, anyone with an idea can make a movie, and being as outrageous and potentially offensive as possible is the name of the game. It’s the manic energy, DIY aesthetic, and “up yours” to conventional standards of cinema that made these movies special in the 70’s and 80’s, and it’s what makes the good flicks of this new wave exciting.

Which brings me to the flick at hand; Dead Hooker in a Trunk. Dead Hooker in a Trunk doesn’t employ the fake aging, but it is more spiritually akin to the exploitation movies it is inspired by than most I’ve seen.
- Nathan Hamilton, Son of Celluloid

Thank you, fucking eh, I completely agree, and thank you again so kindly. This is the beginning of the fantastically intelligent and knowledgeable piece by the sharp, Nathan Hamilton of Son of Celluloid. It's amazing how GRINDHOUSE - which was wrongfully considered an unsuccessful project - was the force that re-ignited the flame of grindhouse, DIY filmmaking.

But as Nathan explains - it's not the weathered footage or the missing reels that make the flick, it's something deeper, and for it to be successful you need to grab onto that independent, 'we don't have any money, so let's use our brains to make something rad' spirit that will never let you down. But did we, the team that I love who came together to create DEAD HOOKER IN A TRUNK, succeed in our ambitions?

The passion they have for films like this and the fun everyone was having making it is evident. It definitely epitomized the DIY school of filmmaking. They have been tight lipped about what the actual budget was, but in an interview on the Altered Realities podcast they said that you couldn’t buy a used car for what they spent on the flick. For a film this low budget, it looks great. The action scenes and gore are amazingly well done, and it has a definite visual flair.

Everyone puts in a good performance. The four central performers in particular have a great onscreen chemistry and, in a rarity for movies these days, actual character arcs. The story is very creative and unpredictable. It moves along at a breakneck pace that keeps you constantly anticipating just what kind of outrageousness and weirdness they are going to throw your way next. The final line of the film is both a perfect coda to the ride you’ve just been on and a laugh out loud inside joke for lovers of this type of flick. In other words, this movie is just a whole hell of a lot of fun.

Now no more delicious morsels of this fine horror aficionado dining review - you must make your reservations, put on a tie, and prepare for the entire yummy helping here. Also, I think if you look around for a boo or two, you will dig this talented and well versed writer's musings on your favorite bloody flicks.

Thank you so kindly for checking out the film and doing such a thoughtful review on the piece, Nathan! Can't wait to share the new flick, AMERICAN MARY, with you. All of you.

Complex Talks to the Twisted Twins about Dead Hookers, Skull Fucking, Evisceration... You Know, The Best Girly Stuff

Back in the late 1970s and early ’80s, when exploitation movies were in vogue, a movie title like Dead Hooker In A Trunk would have fit right onto the marquees of sleazy drive-in theaters and seedy grindhouse venues that played such classy gems as Cannibal Holocaust and I Spit On Your Grave.

Today, however, such a shamelessly tasteless and provocative title is more taboo than ever, but that’s what makes Dead Hooker (currently available on IFC Midnight’s Video On Demand service) so much fun—it’s batshit in ways most modern-day films are too reserved to emulate. Aside from its titular call girl corpse, the midnight-dark comedy features a cowboy pimp, an Oldboy-esque scene in which a guy’s teeth are assaulted with a drill and an icepick, a pipe smashing a girl’s head so hard that one of her eyeballs shoots out, spilled intestines, and a little girl shooting her father to death with a handgun, amongst other insanity.

Now here’s the best part: Dead Hooker In A Trunk comes from the minds of two sexy and morbidly inventive twin sisters, stars/writers/directors Jen and Sylvia Soska. Paid for with credit cards and shot with minimal resources two years ago, the Canadian siblings’ passion project has worked its way up from word-of-mouth buzz to various genre film festivals; last month, Dead Hooker In A Trunk reached its highest plateau when IFC Midnight picked it up for the company’s VOD platform (special midnight theatrical screenings are in the works). Not bad for a super-low-budget and wonderfully insane horror-comedy from a couple of rookie filmmakers.

To top it all off, the Soska Sisters are also really hot. And, as you’re about to find out, they’re quite funny, as well as legitimate gorehounds and promising young filmmakers. Complex recently spoke with the duo behind Twisted Twins Productions about Dead Hooker, skull-fucking, Britney Spears’ awful film career, how they once upgraded Quentin Tarantino’s birthday, and their film’s positive message. Let’s pop the trunk!

- Matt Barone, Complex
Complex Media is fucking cool. We had the pleasure of being approached to chat with their Matt Barone, who embodies that kick ass-ed-ness. But what is this media beast? And why is it just so damn cool. Oh, my dears, I'm so glad you asked...

The Complex Media Network reaches these style-makers and trend-spreaders through its uniquely credible and authentic viewpoint into all things Complex.

It was downright joy~gasmic to be approached to chat with Matt. We've been told we have the minds of 20-something males and the story of DEAD HOOKER IN A TRUNK really is a film that not only the 20-somethings can enjoy, but the every-somethings out there. It makes us so happy to be able to share our story and our Hooker with the masses. After all, sharing is caring ;)

Complex Media is truly a unique and incredible experience and source for all things cool. It was an honor to have our twisted selves and our DEAD HOOKER invited to chat. And what did we chat about?

A pethora of twisted goodies including (but certainly not limited to) Britney Spears and Crossroads, Russ Meyer, Faster Pussycat Kill Kill, Eli Roth, Quentin Tarantino, dead hookers in mattresses, cowboy pimps, punching a bear, and much, much more. I'd love to spoil it like some bastard spoiled the end of the Usual Suspects for me, but I'm so not "that guy".

But you can be that guy and grab the FULL FANTASTICAL INTERVIEW WITH MATT BARONE OF COMPLEX MEDIA right here!

Thank you so much to Matt for taking the time to chat with us and we look very forward to chatting again soon!

Now go check it out, boys and grrls! Here's a little something something to whet your appetites...

Jen: I think I’ve always had a hooker fixation. Have you see that movie Four Rooms? Robert Rodriguez’s fourth vignette, “Misbehaviors,” with Antonio Banderas, has a dead hooker in a mattress, and I just thought that was the funniest thing. [Laughs.]

Sylvia
: A dead hooker in a mattress is the funniest thing? [Laughs.]

Jen: Hell yeah! We should have done Dead Hooker In A Mattress!

Sounds like you have the sequel all figured out.
Jen: [Laughs.] I think you’re right!

A Tragedy That Could Use Your Help

End? No, the journey doesn't end here. Death is just another path, one that we all must take. - Gandalf the White

When someone you love is no longer there, there really are no words to describe the pain, anger, and hurt - the above quote is the only thing that has ever even come close for me. Even when you think you have a handle on it, it comes rushing to the surface when you least expect it. It's hard as an adult and even harder when you're younger.

Jose Rodriguez passed away late July after a tragic motorcycle accident. The unexpected death would be a shock, especially to his wife and young children who would now have to face an ultimate nightmare. The funeral service was held July 31st to a congregation of bereaved family members and friends. Jose's 6 year old would tell friends - "we all need to stick together and be strong", with an understanding of life that no 6 year old should have to face.

On Friday, August 26th at 6pm in at the American Legion - 7908 State Route 69, Oriskany, NY - friends and family will be throwing a Benefit for Jose Rodriguez Family. This will be to raise funds for the Rodriguez children's future. Bands are still to be announced, but there will be live entertainment as well as raffles throughout the night and a yummy buffet. If you are in the New York area and want to go for a night out that would really help some good people out, please make plans to be at this benefit!

Thank you for checking this out and please share the information with your New York friends! A huge thank you to Tim Walchusky who has allowed us to help raise awareness for the Benefit. Tickets are $10 in advance (you can hit up Mr. Walchusky here) and $15 at the door - please make it out to the event and let us know how it went.

Horror Movies I Like: Dead Hooker In A Trunk Edition

Chris Dunlop is as radcore as they come.

Like us, the man is a true lover of horror. And what's more? He loves DEAD HOOKER IN A TRUNK. I mean, how can't you? Dead Hookers are always down for anything. Okay, okay. That's horrible. I know. Still kinda funny, though. Now, where was I?

Oh, yes, the awesomeness of our friend Chris Dunlop. He's not just a lover of horror. He's taken his passion to the next level. He reviews and writes about all things in the horror genre in addition to reviewing films and is an aspiring independent horror filmmaker himself.

We were so happy to have him check out and review our beloved baby, DEAD HOOKER IN A TRUNK. Check out his Wicked Awesome Review here.

GLEE: Gleek On

That's right, horror hounds. I said it. Mother loving GLEE.

What the hell, Jen? Are you drunk again? No. Not yet. But I DO I have a confession to make.

I watch GLEE.

Yep, I watch the hell out of GLEE. Never missed an episode. From the beginning I was skeptical, I must admit, though I am a sucker for musicals. When I heard there was going to be a show that was done musical style, I got excited. VERY excited. But I didn't muster up the courage to watch the premiere. What if I hated it? Or worse, what if I loved it? I ultimately took the plunge and here I am.

I firmly believe the very best of us are geeks and what a wonderful time to live in when geek is chic. Super hero movies are all the rage, Comic Con is now a star studded event, and GLEE has found it's way into even the hardest of hearts. I wasn't all that cool in school. You'd find me haunting the drama room, dreaming of playing Catwoman some day. I wouldn't have been caught dead in the choir room, though. The thought of singing in front of a crowd terrified me. But, secretly, I love to sing.

I had a chance to once. In front of the WHOLE school. It was when that film, DUETS, came out. I was a mere actor, but my friend, a talented singer, asked me to sing with him. I was so excited. Me? Singing? Wow. I enlisted the help of a singer to tutor me. I was terrified to sing for her. I sang anyways. And she told me I was awful. It shattered my self esteem, I backed out of the performance, and I have regretted that decision ever since. I was just too damn scared.

You wouldn't have found me amongst the Cheerleaders either. Being a Buffy fan, I wanted to be one of them so badly, but the school's social structure made it an impossibility. I have always regretted not just saying, "fuck it" and going for both opportunities.

Glee has brought those two secret dreams to light. No doubt about it that we love Halloween with a fiery passion and we have some of the coolest super hero and film heroine duds that you've ever laid eyes on. Now added to that collection? Oh, c'mon, like you can't guess where I'm going with this...

I love to be covered in blood, guts, and gore, but I must also be true to my inner Gleek. After all, a Gleek is just a geek that likes to get their rock on. And how could I not love it when my beloved Joss Whedon guest directs? If you haven't seen DREAM ON, his amazing episode guest starring the sensational Neil Patrick Harris, do treat yourselves (get your GLEE on here). I'm not saying GLEE is without flaw. I tear apart many an episode, but their heart is in the right place. If all us under dogs and outcasts band together we'd realize there's a hell of a lot more of us than the "normies" out there and we wouldn't feel alone or out of place. I love that about GLEE.

I want to send out a very special thank you to our dear friend Henry Ordway Jr. He was kind enough to send me this incredible book from the live performance of GLEE when it was in his town and even gave me the play by play. Friends like that are absolutely invaluable. Thank you so much, Henry. You're wonderful.

And a special thank you to Maggie Wallis for the gore~geous Cheerios uniform. I love it and love you even more.

Candice Fisher of Dehen, Inc helped make my GLEE dream a reality. Check out DEHEN, INC to get your very own CHEERIOS UNIFORM. Thank you for being so awesome, Candice!

So, all you Gleeks out there, say it loud and proud. You can see more of my Gleek Fest Photos here by Sylvia Soska. And to the rest of you? I promise next time you see me I'll be killing some nice stranger ;)

Bloody Best!
